Compare rated capacity and wattage before plugging a heater into a power strip

Key Takeaway

A power strip's limit is its rated capacity: the label's voltage (V) times current (A). Public agencies also say heaters belong in a dedicated wall outlet, whatever the multiplication gives.

How is a power strip's rated capacity calculated?

W = voltage (V) × current (A). In a press release dated September 4, 2025, the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards, the National Fire Research Institute and the Korea Consumer Agency urged people to check an appliance's power consumption in advance and stay within the strip's rated capacity.

Suppose a strip's label reads 250V and 16A. Then 250 × 16 = 4,000W is its rated capacity. That is an assumption to show the arithmetic; read the actual numbers from the label of the strip you plan to buy.

Where is a heater's power consumption written?

On the product label and the manufacturer's specification sheet. The field names differ between products, so match the names before you compare them on one line.

The official Shinil introductions for both products were checked on October 25, 2026. The last row is arithmetic dividing the wattage by 220V. It assumes rated output equals input power, so these are not currents published by the manufacturer.

If the calculation is within the rating, can a heater go on a power strip?

It is not recommended. The same press release tells people to use a dedicated, single-use wall outlet for high-wattage products such as air conditioners and heating appliances. With the 4,000W assumption above, one CN2000 is half the capacity, but the advice is based on the type of product.

The official Shinil introductions did not state any condition for using a power strip or extension cord. Look for the power connection section in the manual first.

The Korea Consumer Agency's injury surveillance system received 387 safety incidents involving power strips, outlets and plugs in 2020–2024. Of the 240 injury cases analyzed, 203 (84.6%) happened in homes.

What should you compare on the power strip candidates?

The table collects only what can be read on the manufacturer's product pages for Hyundai Electric's 2-outlet 3 m and 6-outlet 10 m strips.

The manufacturer's product pages were checked on October 25, 2026. The last row lists items that could not be confirmed. Read the label and packaging of the unit you receive and work out its rated capacity yourself.

The 2-outlet 3 m strip makes the total easy to count when you connect about two appliances. The 6-outlet 10 m strip offers more room, so more appliances tend to end up on it and the total needs more calculation. Individual switches turn off outlets you are not using, and the condition that the appliances left on must not exceed the rated capacity still applies. For standby power markings, see the standby power label article.

In what order should you check your home's total?

  1. Read the voltage and current on the strip's label and multiply them.
  2. Read the W on the rating label of each appliance you will plug into that strip.
  3. Pick only the appliances that run at the same time, add their W, and compare the sum with the rated capacity.
  4. Leave heaters and air conditioners out of the total and move them to their own wall outlet.
  5. If you have plugged a strip into another strip, reduce it to one.

If you plan to run a heater all winter, the monthly power calculation for heaters shows how to multiply W by hours of use. Heater timers and frost protection are covered separately in the heater timer article.

Have you checked the wall outlet where the heater will stand?

First see whether an empty wall outlet is near the spot where the heater will go. If there is none, reconsider the spot before choosing a power strip. Choose a power strip to fit the total of the appliances you will plug in.

When the product arrives, photograph the rated capacity label before you throw away the packaging. You can then recalculate the total each time you swap an appliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

If a power strip is rated 16A, is it fine to plug in one heater?

It is not recommended. Public agencies advise that high-wattage heating appliances use a dedicated wall outlet of their own. That advice stays even when the multiplication result falls within the rated capacity.

Does a power strip with more outlets handle more power?

The outlet count alone does not tell you. Rated capacity comes from the voltage and current on the label. The two candidates here have 2 and 6 outlets, yet both product names show the same 16A current.

Can I plug another power strip into a power strip?

No. The Korea Agency for Technology and Standards, the National Fire Research Institute and the Korea Consumer Agency urged people not to connect one power strip to another. If you run out of outlets, reduce the number of appliances on that one strip.
